Personal Styling is all about fitting the right clothes to your body type and knowing your style personality. Today I am showing you how to discover your body type in 5 simple steps.
Let’s Get Started…
You pick out a pair of jeans and grab a top thinking this is the perfect outfit to wear today. You put it on and step over to the mirror and what you see in it doesn’t match what you pictured in your mind. So you don’t feel as confident as you wanted to and that is no way to start the day. My question for you is what is your body type and are you dressing for it? Do the clothes in your closet actually belong on your body? Are they accentuating your best features or drawing attention to the wrong areas? If you can’t answer these questions confidently I am going to help you do just that today. First we are going to discover your body type in 5 easy steps.
Discover Your Body Type
There are 5 main body types that most women fall into. The Hourglass, Rectangle, Oval, Triangle and Inverted Triangle. I know it can sound overwhelming but I am going to help make this easy for you. First, you need to grab a couple of things to get started.
- flexible tape measure: you can grab one here on amazon or drive to you local craft store. Most should have them.
Take Your Measurements
You are going to take four measurements to discover your body type. If you can have someone help you it will be easier but you can also do it yourself. Just make sure the tape measure is in the correct place, held tight and not twisted. Write down each measurement as you go. Don’t try to remember, just write it down. Let’s start measuring! Measure in the order given and write them down in that order to. It will help you later.
Shoulders: Measure from shoulder end to shoulder end with the tape being flat across the back and the tape should hit in the middle of each shoulder. I put the tape across my back then bring it around the front of the shoulders. Write down this measurement.
Chest: The tape should be flat across the back and come around under your arms. Make sure the tape hits right across the widest part of your chest. Write down this measurement.
Waist: This measurement needs to be take at the natural waist. To determine your natural waist bend from side to side and where your bend is that is your natural waist. Wrap the measuring tape around your natural waist and measure. Write down this measurement.
Hips: This measurement is taken at the widest part of the hips. It should be about 2 inches above the crotch. You want the tape even around your hips. Write down this measurement.
What’s the Verdict?
Your measurements should look like this when written down:
shoulders: 35 Chest: 32 Waist: 26 Hips: 38
You are an Hourglass if your bust to waist & waist to hip ratio is 8 inches or more. You are curvy with a well defined waist. Your body looks proportional. Example: 39-36-28-38
You are a Rectangle if your bust to waist ratio is under 6 inches & the waist to hip ratio is under 7 inches and you are lacing curves and have a smaller bust. Example: 30-28-26-30
You are an Oval if your bust to waist ratio is under 6 inches & the waist to hip ration is under 7 inches and you have a fuller bust and width in the middle. Example: 38-35-30-37
You are a Triangle if your shoulders & bust are smaller than your hips and your waist to hip ratio is 8 inches or larger. Your waist is narrow and you are fuller in the hips and thighs. Example: 35-32-26-38
You are an Inverted Triangle if your shoulders are larger than your hips by 3 inches and your hips are straight. Your shoulders are broad and you have a fuller bust. Your waist and hips are narrower than your shoulders.
